Brazilian municipal traffic safety education programs
Overview
Municipalities in Brazil are implementing various traffic safety education programs targeting students and the general public to reduce road accidents.
In Sorocaba, the Secretariat of Mobility (Semob) launched the “Aluno Seguro: Volta às Aulas” initiative. This program utilizes theatrical presentations, educational blitzes, and activities like “Minicidade” to teach drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians about road rules, such as the prohibition of mobile phone use and alcohol while driving. The program aims to conduct 45 actions by the end of August following a period in the first half of 2026 that reached approximately 95,000 people.
Similarly, in Rio das Ostras, the Secretariat of Education, Sport, and Leisure, in partnership with the Federal Highway Police of Campos dos Goytacazes, has introduced a program for students in the 6th to 9th grades. Held at local municipal schools, these sessions focus on defensive driving, respect for circulation rules, and the shared responsibility of all road users to foster safer environments through citizenship.
In Rio de Janeiro, CET-Rio has entered a new phase of its “A Caminho da Escola 3.0” program. This initiative seeks to transition temporary safety measures into permanent urban interventions through democratic community consultation. By utilizing tactical urbanism—a low-cost strategy involving pavement painting and bollards—the program aims to improve sidewalks, raised crossings, and signage. During pilot activities in the Campo Grande district at the Tóquio and Ministro Alcides Carneiro municipal schools, residents, students, and teachers participated in workshops and cultural events to suggest improvements such as new sidewalks and parking areas. Since 2022, the program has reached 81 municipal schools.
