Rio de Janeiro rolls out traffic closures, street‑vendor program and safety measures
On June 15‑16 the city’s transit agency CET‑Rio scheduled closures of several key tunnels—including Santa Bárbara, Rebouças, Acústico, Zuzu Angel—and the lower deck of the Elevated of Bandeiras for maintenance and revitalisation, directing drivers to alternate routes such as Avenida Niemeyer.
The municipal project "Ambulante Harmonia" marked its first anniversary in the Taquara neighbourhood, regularising 150 street‑vendor stalls with standardized kiosks, clearing sidewalks and boosting local commerce. Subprefect Igor Augusto highlighted the positive impact on pedestrian flow and sales.
Rio’s municipal Guard reported more than 5,400 citizen interactions and 731 arrests during a recent CompStat briefing, seizing phones, motorcycles, bicycles and weapons.
In Rio das Ostras, the city intensified oversight of Rio+ Saneamento works after complaints over potholes and uneven pavement, setting a June‑30 deadline for repairs.
The municipality also formalised a partnership with the State Fire Corps to place a new emergency response vehicle at the local Civil Defence headquarters, aiming to double ambulance availability and improve rapid response capacity.
