Rio de Janeiro aesthetic clinic owner arrested over patient injuries

Ana Paula Lima de Souza Mariano, owner of a network of aesthetic clinics in Rio de Janeiro, has been arrested following investigations into severe patient complications. The Civil Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PCERJ) conducted the operation in Nova Iguaçu and other locations, including Madureira and Barra da Tijuca.

Investigations by the Consumer Police Station (Decon) revealed that patients underwent gluteal harmonization procedures using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), an acrylic substance prohibited for aesthetic use by the Federal Council of Medicine. Victims reported intense pain, infections, nodules, and bleeding. At least two patients remain hospitalized in critical condition as medical professionals struggle to identify the exact substances injected into their bodies.

Authorities are investigating charges including criminal association, illegal practice of medicine, consumer fraud, and risks to public health. During searches, police seized expired medications and electronic equipment. The investigation currently involves approximately 20 inquiries based on client complaints.
