Illegal medical practice investigations in Rio de Janeiro
Overview
Authorities in Rio de Janeiro have arrested Ana Paula Lima de Souza Mariano, the owner of an aesthetic clinic network, following investigations into severe patient complications. The Civil Police of the State of Rio de Janeiro (PCERJ) conducted operations in Nova Iguaçu, Madureira, and Barra da Tijuca.
Investigations by the Consumer Police Station (Decon) found that patients underwent gluteal harmonization procedures using polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), an acrylic substance prohibited for aesthetic use by the Federal Council of Medicine. Victims reported infections, nodules, bleeding, and intense pain, with at least two patients remaining in critical condition.
Police are investigating charges including illegal practice of medicine, consumer fraud, criminal association, and risks to public health. The investigation includes approximately 20 inquiries based on client complaints, and authorities seized expired medications and electronic equipment during searches.
