Rio de Janeiro confirms canine rabies case in Santa Cruz

Health authorities in Rio de Janeiro have confirmed a case of rabies in a dog located in the Santa Cruz neighborhood of the West Zone. The animal, which had a history of contact with bats, was euthanized following the diagnosis in August.

An epidemiological investigation was conducted by the Municipal Health Secretariat. While individuals who had contact with the infected dog received rabies prophylaxis and are being monitored, no human cases of rabies have been recorded. The State Health Secretariat (SES-RJ) noted that the last confirmed human rabies cases in the state occurred in 2006 and 2020, both transmitted via bats.

Diogo Alves, president of the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of Rio de Janeiro (CRMV-RJ), emphasized the importance of keeping pet vaccinations up to date to prevent public health risks. Authorities recommend that pet owners avoid letting animals have free access to streets and suggest that cats be kept indoors with protective screens. A rabies vaccination campaign is scheduled for the upcoming Saturday, the 26th, to increase coverage.
