Rio de Janeiro environmental fund approves R$ 592 million for new projects

The State Fund for Environmental Conservation and Urban Development (Fecam) has approved R$ 592.3 million for new environmental projects and to bolster existing initiatives in Rio de Janeiro. A significant portion of these funds, approximately R$ 498.5 million, will be used to supplement ongoing programs, specifically focusing on drainage, desilting, and the environmental recovery of rivers and canals. The largest single allocation, R$ 286 million, is dedicated to the desilting and cleaning of water bodies across the state.

In the same decision, the council canceled R$ 141.2 million previously earmarked for four specific projects. This includes the cancellation of R$ 103.1 million intended for a water quality project for the Botafogo and Flamengo beaches. Other canceled funds include R$ 23.18 million for Conexão Ambiental, R$ 9.99 million for the Casa das Águas Cultural Center, and R$ 5 million for updating the state's geological risk mapping.

Additionally, the State Environmental Institute (Inea) will receive R$ 93.8 million, with R$ 79.7 million allocated to modernizing the Rio de Janeiro Environmental Laboratory Complex (CLA-RJ) and R$ 14.1 million for the monitoring and operation of the Gericinó Dam.
