Rio de Janeiro implements environmental management and climate resilience programs

Environmental and urban resilience initiatives are underway in Rio de Janeiro. In the Monte Cardoso Fontes area, located within Tijuca National Park, ICMBio and the Rio de Janeiro City Hall conducted operations to remove over 1.5 tons of waste, including tents and metal structures. The action resulted in the removal of 22 irregular campsites. While camping is now suspended, religious activities are permitted under a ‘Good Practices Agreement’ established to balance religious freedom with environmental preservation.

Simultaneously, UN-Habitat has partnered with the Rio de Janeiro government to launch the ‘Resilient Environment’ program. This initiative involves workshops across 34 municipalities to map vulnerabilities and develop climate adaptation plans. The program aims to help cities prepare for extreme weather events, such as floods and heatwaves, through improved infrastructure and emergency protocols, in accordance with local legislation.
