Rio de Janeiro implements new state trail program and renews tourism status

The state of Rio de Janeiro has instituted the State Trail Program (Protrilhas/RJ) to integrate and promote trail management across various regions. Coordinated by the State Institute of the Environment (Inea), the program aims to align with the National Trail System (Sintrilhas) by uniting public and private trails to encourage sustainable tourism and environmental recovery.

A central component of this initiative is the ‘Volta ao Rio’ long-distance super trail. Spanning 3,500 kilometers, the route connects over 100 conservation units and tourist attractions, offering activities such as trekking, cycling, and kayaking through diverse landscapes including mountains, beaches, and forests.

In a related development for the sector, the municipality of Rio de Janeiro has renewed its registration in the Brazilian Tourism Map. This renewal, coordinated by the Ministry of Tourism, ensures the city's continued participation in federal tourism policies and regionalization strategies. Currently, 54 of the 92 municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro are included in the Map, distributed across 12 recognized tourism regions.
