Rio de Janeiro tourism development initiatives
Overview
Rio de Janeiro has initiated several programs to bolster its tourism sector through environmental, cultural, and gastronomic developments.
The state government introduced the State Trail Program (Protrilhas/RJ), coordinated by the State Institute of the Environment (Inea). This initiative seeks to integrate public and private trails to support sustainable tourism and environmental recovery, highlighted by the 3,500-kilometer ‘Volta ao Rio’ super trail. Additionally, the municipality of Rio de Janeiro renewed its registration in the Brazilian Tourism Map to maintain participation in federal tourism policies.
Efforts to expand the tourism experience have also focused on cultural and culinary offerings. In the South Zone, specifically the Leme neighborhood, visitors can engage with local landmarks and outdoor activities. The city has seen a rise in new gastronomic establishments across various districts, including Botafogo, Barra, and Copacabana, ranging from artisanal cocktail bars to traditional seafood venues.
Recent developments have expanded the state’s adventure tourism offerings. In Rio das Ostras, the Vilarejo Praia Resort inaugurated an adventure area featuring a sky bike, described as the first of its kind in the state installed facing the sea. This facility includes a 90-meter zipline, a themed climbing wall, archery, and a mini ropes course.
In Três Rios, the Áurias Park project is a nominee for three categories in the 6th Mauricio de Sousa Award, organized by the Brazilian Association of Parks and Attractions (ADIBRA). The project seeks to convert a former mineral exploration site into an integrated tourism and entertainment complex. Focused on environmental recovery and the restoration of native vegetation, the project is competing in the Creativity, Innovation, and ESG categories.
