Rio de Janeiro launches construction of two new bus terminals in Zona Norte
The Rio de Janeiro municipal government began work on two integrated bus terminals in the city's northern zone on 1 August. The first facility will be built at the Colégio metro station, followed by a terminal at Coelho Neto. Both projects are funded with an estimated investment of about R$ 2 million and are slated for completion within six months.
Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, together with transport secretary Jorge Arraes and conservation secretary Diego Vaz, said the terminals will connect directly to the metro, easing bus congestion on streets and improving passenger comfort. The Colégio terminal will feature six bus bays, restrooms, two sports courts and a children's play area, while the surrounding area will undergo urban re‑organisation. The initiative is intended to shorten travel times to the city centre and major employment hubs such as Barra da Tijuca.
