Overview

In July 2026, Rio de Janeiro’s municipal government announced a series of public-transport projects. On 11 July, it unveiled the Campo Grande Intermodal Bus Terminal, a R$ 81.1 million, 22,200 m² hub serving 33 bus lines that will link the western zone and Baixada Fluminense to the nearby BRT terminal, with construction slated for two years.

A week later, on 25 July, the city inaugurated Conexão BRT line 54, a direct corridor from Centro Olímpico to the Anil neighbourhood, operating from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. with eight-minute weekday intervals and a fleet of 25 new buses.

On 1 August, the municipality began work on two integrated bus terminals in the northern zone—at the Colégio metro station and in Coelho Neto—funded with about R$ 2 million and expected to be completed within six months. The Colégio terminal will include six bus bays, restrooms, two sports courts, and a children’s play area. The same day, the city opened the Caju station on the Transbrasil BRT corridor (line 60, Gentileza ↔ Deodoro-Parador), bringing the corridor to 18 stations.

On 28 August, the city concluded the second phase of a bidding process for the ‘Sistema RIO – Rede Integrada de Ônibus’. This initiative is set to increase the bus fleet in the West Zone (Bangu, Campo Grande, Santa Cruz, and Guaratiba) by 54%, raising the number of vehicles from 654 to 1,006. Companies Jabour and Sancetur won the tender, with operations for the expanded fleet expected to begin in the first quarter of 2027.
