Rio de Janeiro transit expansion

In July 2026 Rio de Janeiro’s municipal government announced two major public‑transport projects. On 11 July the city unveiled plans for the Campo Grande Intermodal Bus Terminal, a R$ 81.1 million facility on a 22,200 m² site that will serve 33 bus lines—21 municipal and 12 inter‑municipal—linking the western zone and Baixada Fluminense to the nearby BRT terminal. Construction is slated to begin after licensing and finish within two years, targeting more than 350 thousand residents.

A week later, on 25 July, Rio inaugurated Conexão BRT line 54, a direct bus‑rapid‑transit corridor from Centro Olímpico to the Anil neighbourhood. The line operates from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m. with eight‑minute weekday intervals, using a fleet of 25 new buses and connecting Freguesia, Curicica and Taquara to the broader BRT network without transfers. Both initiatives aim to improve safety, predictability and integration of bus services across the city.
