Rio de Janeiro lawmakers propose honors for journalist Zuenir Ventura

Following the death of journalist and writer Zuenir Ventura at age 95, members of the Rio de Janeiro City Council have introduced legislative proposals to honor his legacy through public spaces.

One bill, co-authored by Council President Carlo Caiado and several other councilors, proposes naming a municipal school or library after the journalist. A second proposal, signed by Flávio Valle and Carlo Caiado, suggests naming a street, plaza, or viaduct in the Ipanema neighborhood after Ventura, where he resided for over 50 years.

Ventura was a prominent member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and a significant figure in Brazilian journalism, having worked for major outlets such as O Globo and Jornal do Brasil. His literary works, including ‘Cidade Partida’ and ‘1968: O Ano que Não Terminou’, are noted for their analysis of urban violence and political history.
