Death and legacy of Brazilian journalist Zuenir Ventura
Overview
Zuenir Ventura, a prominent Brazilian journalist, writer, and member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras, died at the age of 95 due to pneumonia in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro.
Ventura’s career spanned over six decades, during which he worked for major outlets such as O Globo, Jornal do Brasil, Veja, and Correio da Manhã. He was recognized for his investigative reporting on social and political issues, receiving honors including the Esso, Vladimir Herzog, and Jabuti prizes. His notable works include ‘1968: O Ano que Não Terminou’ and ‘Cidade Partida’.
Following his death, the Biblioteca Municipal Centenário in Poços de Caldas, Minas Gerais, organized a thematic exhibition featuring his literary and journalistic works, such as ‘Chico Mendes: crime e castigo’ and ‘Sagrada Família’, for public consultation. In Rio de Janeiro, legislative proposals were introduced by councilors including Carlo Caiado and Flávio Valle to honor his legacy by naming a municipal school, library, or a public space in the Ipanema neighborhood after him.
In the wake of his passing, the Academia Brasileira de Letras announced 17 candidates competing for Chair 32, the seat previously held by Ventura. The diverse group of contenders includes writers, journalists, researchers, and visual artists, notably physician and author Drauzio Varella. An election to select a new member via absolute majority is scheduled for November 12.
