Rio de Janeiro Mayor calls for aviation inspections after fatal helicopter crash
Following a fatal helicopter crash in the Vista Chinesa region of Rio de Janeiro, Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere has formally requested that the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) take immediate action. The accident, which occurred in the Tijuca Forest area, resulted in the deaths of four people: pilot Alessandro Rocha and three Colombian tourists, members of the same family.
The aircraft involved was a Robinson R44 operated by Voos Rio Panorâmicos. While ANAC indicated the helicopter had a valid airworthiness certificate and authorization for scenic flights, the Mayor has proposed a temporary suspension of such flights for one to two weeks. This suspension would allow for intensified inspections of helipads, aircraft, and maintenance procedures to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists.
Cavaliere cited the recent recurrence of aerial accidents in the city—noting more than one incident in approximately six weeks—as a primary reason for the urgent request. Investigations into the crash are being conducted by Cenipa, the Civil Police, and the Brazilian Air Force.
