Rio de Janeiro government plans body camera procurement for 2027
The Rio de Janeiro state government intends to conclude the bidding process and contract new body cameras for security forces by March 2027. This timeline was presented to the Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office (MPRJ) during a meeting with the State Secretariat of Public Security (SESP).
The expansion of surveillance technology follows intense pressure after the October 2025 'Operação Contenção', which resulted in 122 deaths and was recorded as the most lethal operation in the state's history. The MPRJ's Specialized Group for Public Security (Gaesp) has emphasized the need for these devices to ensure transparency, preserve evidence, and strengthen the oversight of police activities.
Discussions between officials also focused on the management of recorded footage. Security Secretary Victor dos Santos stated the goal is to ensure all images remain under state custody to allow immediate access for investigative and judicial authorities. The move aligns with guidelines from the Supreme Federal Court (STF) regarding the oversight of police operations in favelas.
