Rio de Janeiro police shooting of Queimados official

Overview

Jefferson Dias da Silva, the Municipal Secretary of Economic Development for Queimados and a former city councilman, was shot and killed by Military Police on the night of October 19, 2026. The incident took place on Avenida Brasil in Rio de Janeiro near the Marinha Mercante BRT station. Video footage captured by motorists shows officers firing shots at the victim’s BYD vehicle during a traffic stop.

While preliminary reports suggest the driver may have failed to comply with a police order to stop, the exact circumstances remain under investigation. In response, Acting Governor Ricardo Couto ordered the immediate suspension of the involved officers. The Military Police have seized the officers' weapons and opened an internal investigation through the General Corregedoria, while the Capital Homicide Police Station is conducting a criminal inquiry involving the analysis of body camera footage and eyewitness videos.

Queimados Mayor Glauco Kaizer declared three days of official mourning following the death of the Christian Democracy (DC) party member. The incident has occurred amidst broader state discussions regarding police transparency and the planned implementation of new body cameras by March 2027.
