Rio de Janeiro plans major tunnel and viaduct closures for June 29‑30
The city's transport agency, CET‑Rio, announced scheduled closures affecting several key routes on the night of Monday, 29 June 2026, continuing into the early hours of Tuesday.
The Santa Bárbara Tunnel will be closed southbound (Laranjeiras direction) from 23:30 to 04:30 for maintenance. The Rebouças Tunnel will be closed northbound (Centro direction) from 22:00 to 05:00 for revitalisation, with a reversible lane operating on the opposite side. The Zuzu Angel and Acústico Rafael Mascarenhas tunnels (Gávea direction) will be shut from 23:30 to 05:00 for maintenance; drivers are directed to use Avenida Niemeyer, which will run in both directions. The lower deck of the Bandeiras viaduct (São Conrado direction) will be closed from 23:00 to 04:30 for revitalisation, while the upper deck remains open. CET‑Rio urged motorists to follow posted signage, noted that operators will monitor traffic conditions, and said traffic‑light timings will be adjusted to ease congestion on alternate routes.
