Rio de Janeiro police dismantle taxi fraud scheme at Galeão Airport

Rio de Janeiro Civil Police have dismantled a fraudulent taxi meter scheme operating at Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão). Investigators discovered that criminals used clandestine devices to multiply fare prices during trips. In one instance, a 22-kilometer ride to Copacabana cost R$ 900, which is approximately seven times the official rate.

The scheme involved organized crime elements linked to the Comando Vermelho. Taxistas reportedly paid daily fees to the criminal group in exchange for parking spaces near the airport and protection. The operation also utilized “jóqueis” (jockeys)—individuals who approach passengers in the arrival halls to direct them to specific taxis.

Police believe approximately 200 vehicles may have been equipped with these devices. The investigation, which began following a passenger complaint in January 2026, is looking into charges of criminal association, fraud, and crimes against consumer relations. Authorities have seized seventeen taxis for forensic analysis and taken 33 suspects to the police station for questioning.
