Rio de Janeiro police target Complexo de Israel with major operation

The Rio de Janeiro Military Police launched a major operation in the Complexo de Israel, targeting the Terceiro Comando Puro criminal faction. The action, involving approximately 200 officers and armored vehicles, focused on the communities of Cidade Alta, Pica-Pau, and Cinco Bocas.

For the first time in the city, authorities reported the use of car bombs and remote-controlled explosive devices by traffickers. Officers also discovered nearly 10 tons of barricades, some equipped with explosives designed to launch shrapnel. Following the intense confrontation, the police announced an indefinite occupation of Cidade Alta to reinforce security.

The operation caused significant disruption, including the temporary closure of Avenida Brasil and the Washington Luiz Highway. A bus driver, Douglas Santos de Souza, was shot in the shoulder by a stray bullet while commuting to work; he remains in stable condition at Hospital Getúlio Vargas. Additionally, the violence led to the suspension of classes at multiple schools and the temporary closure of several primary healthcare units in the affected areas.
