Rio de Janeiro prolongs Federal National Force stay, adds municipal patrols in Barra da Tijuca
The Federal National Force will remain in Rio de Janeiro after the state government submitted a new request to the Ministry of Justice and Public Security. Although the original deployment period ended on Sunday, the State Secretariat of Public Security issued a technical opinion supporting the continuation. The force, which arrived on 16 October 2023 with about 150 agents and 40 vehicles, assists the Military Police in patrolling major expressways such as Avenida Brasil, Linha Vermelha and Linha Amarela.
Starting Sunday 5 July, the elite municipal Guard (Força Municipal) began operating in two zones of Barra da Tijuca – from Terminal Jardim Oceânico to Praça do Ó and along Avenida Ayrton Senna to Avenida das Américas. Forty municipal agents, equipped for visible policing, will target areas with the highest robbery and theft rates. Since its March launch, the municipal force has recorded more than 6,600 approaches, 817 arrests and the recovery of numerous stolen items, expanding its presence to 12 city districts.
