Rio de Janeiro Public Ministry discusses new anti‑facção law

On Friday, 31 July 2026, the Ministério Público do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ) convened a meeting to examine the newly enacted Lei Antifacção and the challenges posed by ultra‑violent criminal organisations. Prosecutor‑General Antonio José Campos Moreira said the legislation is a firm response to groups that have expanded beyond ordinary crime to impose rigid territorial and social control over vulnerable communities.

Moreira stressed the need for the Public Ministry to develop uniform interpretations of the law to ensure coordinated institutional action. He highlighted that the law provides new tools to combat organisations that use violence to dominate territory, restrict rights and economically exploit entire communities. Alexandre Araripe Marinho, chief of the Criminal Affairs Office, added that a harmonious reading of the new legal instruments and coordinated action are essential given the evolving dynamics of organized crime.
