Brazilian samba schools prepare for Carnaval 2027
Preparations for the 2027 Carnival season are underway across various Brazilian samba schools, with several major organizations announcing themes and musical compositions.
In Rio de Janeiro, Beija-Flor de Nilópolis has selected its samba-enredo, ‘Zeneida: O Sopro do Pó de Louro’, which will tell the story of a pajé from Marajó Island. Império Serrano has opted to merge two finalist compositions for its parade, which will address themes of counterculture and resistance during the military dictatorship. Mangueira has recorded its samba featuring prominent Brazilian artists Alcione, Maria Bethânia, Daniela Mercury, and Leci Brandão. Additionally, Unidos de Bangu has launched its theme, ‘A Outra Ceia’, honoring composer Marquinho PQD, with Camila Prins continuing as drum queen.
In Rio Claro, local samba schools are also facing transitions. The 2027 festivities are expected to coincide with the city's 200th anniversary, though some schools are navigating leadership changes and organizational restructuring.
