Brazil expands SUS healthcare through digital tools and new medications

Brazil's Unified Health System (SUS) is undergoing several digital and pharmaceutical expansions. The Ministry of Health and Ministry of Communications have announced a R$ 50 million initiative using Fust funds to bring high-speed internet to 1,832 Basic Health Units across 26 states, aiming to improve digital management and telemedicine capabilities.

In terms of pharmaceutical care, President Lula sanctioned Law No. 5.972/2023, which expands the availability of thrombolytic drugs for treating heart attacks and ischemic strokes within the SUS urgency and emergency network, including UPAs. Additionally, the new AF-Onco policy, with an estimated annual budget of R$ 2.1 billion, will introduce three high-technology lung cancer medications—brigatinib, gefitinib, and durvalumab—to the public system starting in October 2026.

Digital accessibility is also being addressed through a pilot program developed by Integra Saúde Digital. This WhatsApp-based system allows patients to schedule and reschedule appointments, potentially benefiting 20.4 million users by reducing absenteeism. While the tool is being tested in partner municipalities and is not yet a national mandate, it aims to streamline access to medical services.
