Brazil invests in AI sovereignty and supercomputing infrastructure

Brazil is advancing its technological sovereignty through significant investments in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure. The federal government plans to spend over R$ 2 billion to acquire two of the world's ten most powerful supercomputers, sourced from the United States and China, to foster the development of native AI models.

To support this digital transition, the country is focusing on infrastructure, energy capacity, and the retention of highly skilled professionals. Regional efforts are also underway, such as the development of the Brasília Tech Hub and the AI Cities Summit in Rio de Janeiro, aimed at creating robust innovation ecosystems.

However, challenges remain, including the need for better data processing capabilities and institutional stability in science and technology sectors. Recent administrative changes in Rio de Janeiro's science secretariat and the long-standing freeze on international research grants highlight ongoing debates regarding the sustainability of Brazil's scientific and technological progress.
