Brazil tourism reaches record highs in 2026 as foreign visitor numbers surge
Brazil's tourism sector recorded historic performance in 2026. Domestic earnings hit a record R$ 23.2 billion in April, a 2.7 % increase over the previous year, driven largely by air travel revenue of R$ 6.9 billion. The sector’s growth was supported despite a modest 1.8 % rise in passenger‑kilometres, the lowest since 2021, and benefited from higher average fares after a sharp jump in jet‑fuel costs.
International arrivals continued to climb, surpassing 9 million visitors in 2025 and targeting 10 million by year‑end 2026. Argentina remained the top source market, followed by Chile, the United States and Uruguay. Foreign tourists injected roughly US$ 4.8 billion (about R$ 24.8 billion) in the first five months, an 11.6 % increase over the same period in 2025. The influx boosted the hospitality and food‑service sectors, with bars and restaurants experiencing heightened demand as visitors seek authentic culinary experiences.
The year also saw a surge in technical‑scientific events, notably the AIDS 2026 Congress scheduled for July 26‑31 at Rio’s Riocentro, expected to draw over 2.2 million participants and generate about R$ 3.5 billion for the local economy. Brazil’s tourism profile was further enhanced by international recognitions: beaches in Arraial do Cabo and Fernando de Noronha made the world’s top‑50 list, while Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo earned accolades for walkability and cultural vibrancy. These developments underscore Brazil’s growing appeal as a global tourism destination.
