Rio de Janeiro's BRT Seguro celebrates five years with over 5,300 arrests

The BRT Seguro program, coordinated by Rio de Janeiro’s Secretaria Municipal de Ordem Pública, marked its five‑year anniversary in June. Operating on the Transoeste, Transcarioca, Transolímpica and Transbrasil corridors, the initiative deploys more than 400 agents daily, supported by four mobile patrol teams that work 24 hours.

Since its launch, the program has recorded 5,330 arrests for offenses such as robbery, theft, vandalism, contempt and sexual harassment, issued 20,584 fare‑evasion citations and 40,815 traffic fines, and achieved a 90 % reduction in vandalism incidents at stations across the city’s North, West, Southwest and Central zones. Secretary of Public Order Marcus Belchior attributed the results to a combination of planning, technology and permanent on‑site presence, while commander Eider Figueiredo highlighted the integration of camera monitoring with proactive patrols as key to the program’s success.
