Rio Doce basin ecological restoration receives R$232.7 million investment

The Brazilian Ministry of Environment has allocated R$232.7 million to the Ecological Restoration Project for Priority Aquatic Ecosystems in the Rio Doce basin. The programme, coordinated by the State Institute of Forests (IEF), will run for an initial five‑year period with the possibility of extending up to 20 years.

The plan targets the restoration of riverbeds and habitats across the main river, its tributaries and the sub‑basin of the São Antônio River, using bio‑engineering structures, removal of small barriers, dredging and habitat enhancement. It also includes control of invasive fish species, extensive environmental monitoring, and community outreach such as training local fishers, promoting sustainable aquaculture practices and environmental education. The project aims to improve water quality, revive native fish stocks and support livelihoods that were disrupted by the 2015 Fundão dam collapse.

IEF officials cite the initiative as a key step toward rebuilding biodiversity and a sustainable fisheries sector for the region’s riverine communities.
