Rio Favela Tourism Project Launches World Cup Tour
The social enterprise Na Favela Turismo has introduced a World Cup‑themed route called “Copa na Favela” in Rio de Janeiro’s Rocinha and Vidigal neighborhoods. The tour, organized by entrepreneur Renan Monteiro, began on Saturday, 13 June, and offers visitors guided walks to community football courts, a capoeira showcase, lessons in the local game “altinha,” and a chance to play a “pelada” at the Castelinho site. Participants can also watch Brazil’s World Cup matches on a large screen at the Rocinha viewpoint while enjoying samba performances.
Monteiro said the initiative aims to foster social integration and generate income for residents, noting that “sport and culture have the power to bring people together and promote social inclusion.” The project has already attracted more than 40,000 visitors in a month and expects its peak in August. Tourists come mainly from Latin America – Argentina, Chile and Colombia – as well as Brazil, the United States, France, Italy and other countries worldwide.
