Rio Grande do Sul authorities issue flood alerts and new protection plans

Authorities in Rio Grande do Sul have issued alerts regarding rising river levels and flood risks. In Nova Santa Rita, the Rio Caí remains above the flood threshold at 3.84 meters, while the Rio dos Sinos is currently below its reference level.

A red alert was issued for the islands of Porto Alegre due to a very high risk of flooding caused by the potential rise of the Guaíba River. Residents in high-risk areas are advised to follow contingency plans and seek safe locations if necessary.

In response to recurring climate vulnerabilities, Gravataí has proposed a pilot project to establish a Community Protection and Civil Defense Nucleus (NUPDEC) in the Vila Rica neighborhood. The project, which seeks funding from the Public Ministry of Rio Grande do Sul, involves an investment of approximately R$ 605,348. The initiative aims to install modular structures in containers to facilitate local monitoring, triage, and the training of community volunteers to assist during extreme weather events.
