Rio Grande do Sul Government Announces $3.1 bn Flood Mitigation Investment
The state government of Rio Grande do Sul disclosed a R$3.1 billion program to address recurring flood damage. The plan includes R$300 million for desilting and cleaning of streams and small rivers through agreements with 185 of the 226 municipalities, with 4.6 million cubic metres of sediment removed since January 2025. Across the state, 48 projects are under way to restore roads and build bridges, while an additional R$700 million is earmarked for waterway development.
Civil Defense has quadrupled its personnel and updated municipal contingency plans for all 497 cities, aiming to improve preparedness for future severe weather events. The government cited the investments as a response to long‑standing criticism over deforestation, pollution, and climate‑related flooding.
