Rio Grande do Sul rivers face fluctuating levels after heavy flooding
The state of Rio Grande do Sul is experiencing a period of fluctuating weather following heavy rainfall that caused rivers such as the Taquari, Caí, Jacuí, Quaraí, and Guaíba to flood. While a temporary reprieve from heavy rain is expected mid-week, meteorologists warn that clouds will persist and rain may return over the weekend.
In Lajeado, the Taquari River has begun to recede slowly after reaching a peak of 23.3 meters. Despite the gradual decrease in water levels, the river remains above the flood threshold, causing road closures and ongoing displacement. Approximately 170 people from 61 families are currently being housed in emergency shelters at Parque do Imigrante following preventive evacuations of residents in high-risk areas.
