Rio Grande do Sul storms displace 2,600 people and cause widespread damage
Severe storms and a cold front have caused significant damage across Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The state's Civil Defense reports that 2,686 people have been displaced following intense rainfall and high winds. The weather instability has affected 117 municipalities, resulting in property damage such as roof collapses, fallen trees, and downed power lines.
Casualties include one death, involving a motorcyclist in Montenegro, and five injuries reported in various locations, including Novo Hamburgo and Osório. The most affected areas for displacement include Minas do Leão with 500 people, Novo Hamburgo with 480, and Sapiranga with 360.
In addition to the storm damage, the water utility Corsan reported that approximately 93,065 properties were impacted by water supply interruptions due to power outages affecting pumping and treatment systems. While a bomb cyclone formed near the coast, authorities clarified that the primary damage was driven by a cold front and instability line rather than the cyclone itself. A tornado was also confirmed in Pedro Osório.
