Rio municipal police begin patrols in Barra da Tijuca

The Rio de Janeiro city government announced that its municipal police force, the Força Municipal, will start patrol operations in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood on Sunday, 5 July. About 50 agents will cover two designated zones – the stretch from Terminal Jardim Oceânico to Praça do Ó, which includes the metro station and BRT terminal, and the corridor from Avenida Ayrton Senna to Avenida das Américas, encompassing the Barra Shopping area, Terminal Alvorada and Bosque da Barra.

Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, Urban Security Secretary Brenno Carnevale and Força Municipal director Aimée de La Torre presented the deployment plan to local businessmen, community leaders and residents, emphasizing a preventive, overt policing model supported by the CIVITAS intelligence centre and real‑time monitoring through CompStat. Since the force began operations on 15 March, it has recorded more than 6,600 approaches, 817 arrests, recovered dozens of stolen phones, motorcycles and weapons, and has operated without any firearm discharge.

The expansion brings the Força Municipal’s presence to 12 city areas, with agents equipped with body‑cameras, motorcycles and vehicles, operating in pairs or trios and following pre‑planned patrol routes based on crime‑hotspot analysis.
