BHP launches $1.5 bn Cerro Colorado copper mine extension in Chile

BHP has filed an Environmental Impact Study with Chile's SEIA to reactivate the Cerro Colorado copper mine in the Tarapacá region. The $1.5 billion project aims to extend the mine’s life by 20 years, targeting production of about 130,000 tonnes of copper cathodes annually.

The plan foresees up to 4,500 jobs, with roughly 1,500 positions during construction and more than 3,000 permanent roles once the operation is running. A key sustainability feature is the use of treated wastewater from Alto Hospicio, conveyed through a circular‑economy water system that will transport the water via a pipeline of over 100 km, eliminating the need for freshwater sources.

BHP’s spokesperson highlighted the initiative as an opportunity to build a future‑ready operation that addresses water management, environmental protection, and community engagement while contributing to regional economic growth.
