Riot Games to end support for 2XKO fighting game

Riot Games is ending development and support for its fighting game, 2XKO, by the end of this year. The company announced it will provide refunds to players who have made in-game purchases.

During a panel at PAX West, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill stated that the project was not a “mistake,” noting that the studio delivered a high-quality game that took risks with its tag-team mechanics. However, he acknowledged that the game failed to reach the level of profitability and player retention required to sustain a live-service model. Merrill attributed the struggle to the intense competition for player attention in a market where thousands of titles are released annually.

Despite the discontinuation of 2XKO, Riot Games confirmed that its League of Legends-themed MMO remains in active development. Merrill described the MMO project as the company’s “Holy Grail,” expressing confidence in its future despite the challenges inherent in the genre.
