Riot Games 2XKO development cancellation
Overview
Riot Games announced it is ceasing development on its 2D fighting game, 2XKO, following low player counts since its January launch. The company outlined final content updates for the title, including a September 8 patch featuring the character Lux, balance adjustments, new skins, and a new stage.
During a panel at PAX West, Riot co-founder Marc Merrill clarified that while 2XKO was not a mistake, it failed to reach the profitability necessary to sustain development due to intense competition for user time. Merrill noted that while the studio delivered a high-quality game that took risks with its tag-team mechanics, it could not maintain the player retention required for a live-service model.
Riot confirmed it will end support for the game later this year and will issue refunds for in-game purchases. Despite the cancellation, Merrill described the company’s League of Legends-themed MMO as its ‘holy grail’ and expressed optimism regarding its continued development.
