Riot Games to end active development of 2XKO by late 2026
Riot Games has announced that it will cease active development of its fighting game, 2XKO, by December 2026. The decision follows a period of monitoring player retention, revenue, and engagement levels. Despite the game being based on the popular League of Legends universe, Riot reported that player numbers were insufficient to justify continued development costs.
While active development will end, the game will not be shut down. Servers will remain available, and offline play will still be possible. To conclude the project, Riot plans to release the characters Lux in September and Samira in October 2026, followed by a final bug-fix update in December. Additionally, all characters will be unlocked for players, and eligible purchases made on or before August 20, 2026, will be refunded.
The decline in the game's momentum was noted by a significant drop in Twitch viewership and lower participation in major tournaments compared to competitors like Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8. This move follows previous staff reductions within Riot Games aimed at managing costs.
