Riot Platforms expands into AI data centers and manages Bitcoin collateral
Riot Platforms is undergoing a significant strategic shift, expanding from Bitcoin mining into large-scale AI data center development. The company has signed leases for 241MW of AI data center capacity, representing approximately $9.8 billion in long-term contracted revenue. A major component of this is a 191MW build-to-suit lease at the Rockdale campus with a leading AI lab, which could potentially reach $16.1 billion in value with extension options. To fund these developments, Morgan Stanley is providing a $573 million interim financing facility.
Simultaneously, the company's Bitcoin treasury management is being impacted by market volatility. Riot has approximately 5,821 BTC pledged as collateral for a $200 million loan from Coinbase. Following a recent Bitcoin price rally toward $78,000, the loan-to-value ratio has dropped to roughly 44.1%. This price increase may allow Riot to release between 1,159 and 1,547 BTC from the collateral agreement, depending on the specific schedules within their credit agreement.
