Back-to-school costs rise, straining family budgets
Families are facing significant financial pressure as the new school year begins. In Spain, the OCU reports that the average cost per family is approximately 2,190 euros, representing a 4% increase from the previous year and a 26% rise over the last seven years. Costs vary significantly by institution type, with private schools averaging 8,700 euros per course compared to 3,400 euros in subsidized schools. Key expenses include textbooks, school supplies, uniforms, and extracurricular activities.
In Catalonia, the situation is particularly acute for vulnerable populations. The NGO Educo reports that over 135,000 children at risk of poverty are without school meal grants, despite an increase in overall investment. Additionally, the cost of school meals has risen for the fourth consecutive year, reaching 7.83 euros per day.
In Mexico, reports from the Toluca Valley indicate that some public schools are pressuring parents for voluntary contributions that are effectively mandatory for enrollment. Meanwhile, in Ecuador, financial experts emphasize the importance of long-term planning and insurance to protect families against unexpected economic shocks that could disrupt a child's education.
