Rising fuel prices and cost-of-living unrest fuel European far-right momentum
Soaring fuel and energy prices are driving widespread unrest across Europe, providing political momentum to far-right parties ahead of upcoming elections in nations such as France, Italy, and Poland. The economic pressure is exacerbated by the US-Iran war, which began in February and has significantly disrupted energy markets. The European Commission estimates the conflict has cost Europe approximately €100 billion ($112 billion) due to trade and energy market disruptions.
In France, protests that initially focused on deteriorating school facilities in Paris suburbs have escalated into significant civil unrest, involving looting and arson, including the burning of a town hall in Limoges. Gas prices have risen by roughly 140%, while diesel prices have doubled. French President Emmanuel Macron has acknowledged the legitimate demands regarding the cost of living while condemning the accompanying violence.
