Americans face financial strain from rising costs of living
Rising costs for essential goods and services are significantly impacting household finances across the United States. A SoFi survey reveals that 85% of respondents find their daily lives more expensive than five years ago, leading 77% of those surveyed to delay major life events such as purchasing vehicles, taking vacations, or making housing-related expenditures.
Financial pressures are forcing difficult trade-offs. A Consumer Reports survey found that approximately one in five Americans has cut back on groceries to afford rising electricity bills. Additionally, childcare costs have risen faster than inflation, with the national average for full-time care exceeding $13,000 in 2025, creating significant budgetary strain for families.
To manage these expenses, some individuals are utilizing emergency savings, increasing work hours, or reducing retirement contributions. In some cases, consumers are turning to specific budgeting strategies, such as cash-only spending for dining out and strict meal rotation, to regain control over food expenses.
