Keelung faces severe flooding from heavy rainfall; Akita river exceeds danger level

Heavy rainfall has caused significant flooding in Keelung, Taiwan, and rising river levels in Akita, Japan.

In Keelung, 24-hour rainfall reached approximately 280mm, with intense bursts exceeding 70mm per hour. This caused widespread flooding in low-lying areas such as Xiding Road and near the Dawulun Creek, where high water levels prevented efficient drainage. Local authorities reported dozens of incidents involving flooding, debris, and road damage. Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang inspected the affected areas and announced disaster relief subsidies ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 TWD for damaged households. The city is also seeking to improve early warning systems through mobile alerts and is pushing for the construction of a detention basin to mitigate future risks.

In Japan, the Shinjo River in Akita City exceeded its flood danger level on September 3 due to heavy rains, prompting local monitoring.
