Rising summer temperatures in the United States are significantly altering consumer clothing choices. Data from Climate Central indicates that average summer temperatures have risen in 97% of analyzed U.S. cities since 1970, with NOAA recording July 2026 as the warmest month for the contiguous U.S. since recordkeeping began.
Experts note that dressing for extreme heat involves a complex balance of heat and moisture management. While linen and cotton are popular for their breathability, researchers emphasize that fabric construction, such as weave and knit patterns, is as critical as fiber content. Linen is noted for moving moisture vapor faster than cotton or polyester and its natural stiffness helps prevent it from clinging to the skin.
Textile scientists highlight the importance of air permeability and wicking. Effective clothing should facilitate sweat evaporation without being hampered by water- or soil-repellent finishes. While engineered synthetic fibers are often used in sportswear for wicking, the fit of a garment also plays a vital role in providing necessary ventilation during hot outdoor conditions.
