Impact of rising U.S. temperatures on apparel choices

Rising summer temperatures in the United States are influencing consumer choices regarding apparel and fabric selection. Data from Climate Central indicates that average summer temperatures have increased in 97% of the 243 U.S. cities analyzed since 1970. Furthermore, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that July 2026 was the warmest month recorded in the contiguous U.S. since 1895.

As heat intensity increases, the focus of clothing has shifted toward balancing thermal comfort and moisture management. Experts note that dressing for extreme heat involves more than just wearing less clothing, as uncovered skin can absorb more solar heat and increase burn risks.

Materials scientists highlight the functional benefits of specific fabrics, such as linen, which is noted for its ability to move moisture vapor more quickly than cotton or polyester. Beyond fiber content, researchers emphasize that fabric construction, including weave and knit patterns, is critical for performance. For instance, the natural stiffness of linen helps prevent the fabric from clinging to the skin.

Textile scientists also highlight the importance of air permeability and wicking. Effective clothing should facilitate sweat evaporation without being hampered by water- or soil-repellent finishes. While engineered synthetic fibers are frequently used in sportswear for wicking, the fit of a garment is also considered a vital factor in providing necessary ventilation during hot outdoor conditions.
