Graubünden bus accident kills five Dutch tourists
A fatal bus accident involving a group of Dutch tourists occurred on Thursday afternoon in the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. The vehicle, operated by the Dutch travel organization Oad, was traveling between Susch and Zernez in the Engadin valley when it collided with a guardrail, left the roadway, and overturned on its side.
According to reports from the Graubünden Cantonal Police, five people died in the accident. Approximately 40 other passengers sustained injuries, with three reported to be in serious condition. The bus was carrying between 45 and 49 Dutch citizens, including the driver, who survived the incident. The group was on a day trip from Austria to Switzerland.
Preliminary investigations suggest the accident may have occurred in a construction zone where traffic was reduced to a single lane. One hypothesis being explored is that the driver performed an evasive maneuver to avoid an obstacle, such as a rock, on the road. Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his condolences to the victims' families and promised a thorough investigation into the circumstances of the crash. Emergency services, including multiple rescue helicopters, were deployed to the scene, and rescue operations continued late into the night.
