Fatal accidents in Switzerland
Overview
In Switzerland, a tour bus operated by the Dutch company Oad overturned on a mountain road in the canton of Graubünden between Susch and Zernez. The vehicle was carrying approximately 48 to 49 Dutch passengers on a day trip from Austria to Switzerland when it struck a guardrail and left the roadway, landing on its side on an embankment near the entrance to the Swiss National Park.
Authorities have confirmed at least five fatalities and approximately 40 injuries, with several victims reported to be in serious condition. Emergency responders, specialized rescue teams, and five rescue helicopters were deployed to the Engadine valley. Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed condolences to the victims' families and announced that a thorough investigation will be conducted to determine the exact circumstances of the crash. The Dutch Federation of Travel Agencies (ANVR) also expressed “deep shock” regarding the incident. Preliminary reports suggest the driver may have attempted an evasive maneuver to avoid an obstacle on the road. Recent details indicate the accident occurred in a construction zone where the roadway was partially reduced to a single lane.
Separate from the bus accident, a fatal explosion and subsequent fire occurred at the historic 1917 Ritom hydroelectric plant in the canton of Ticino. The blast caused significant damage and a partial collapse of the building, which was undergoing renovations and is owned by SBB. The incident resulted in the deaths of two workers, including a 55-year-old Swiss resident from the Lugano region. Public prosecutor Valentina Tuoni is coordinating the investigation into the cause of the explosion.
