Ritter Sport covers sustainability claims on packaging

Ritter Sport has begun covering its previous sustainability claim, ‘100% certified sustainable cocoa sourcing’, with stickers on various chocolate bar packages. The company stated that this transition is a response to the EU consumer protection directive EmpCo, which aims to prevent greenwashing by tightening rules around vague environmental and sustainability claims in advertising.

To manage the transition without destroying existing packaging, the company is using stickers that also highlight the product weight, such as ‘100 g’. This move follows previous consumer criticism regarding the clarity of weight specifications on certain bars. Ritter Sport maintains that it continues to use exclusively certified cocoa and noted that most of its bars have long been produced without added flavors.
