River pirates attack ferry boat in Amazonas

Armed criminals, referred to by the Amazonas State Security Public Secretariat as ‘river pirates’, attacked the ferry boat Rosa de Saron on Friday night. The vessel was traveling from Maraã to Manaus in the Middle Solimões region when approximately ten hooded and armed suspects arrived in motorboats.

Witnesses reported that the assailants violently assaulted passengers and crew members while stealing mobile phones, bags, and internet equipment. The attackers also broke into cargo storage areas and the ship’s refrigerator, causing structural damage. While some passengers suggested the motive was to locate drugs being transported on the vessel, police have not confirmed this hypothesis.

No serious injuries were reported during the incident. The Amazonas Military Police dispatched three boats from Tefé to respond to the call, but the criminals had already fled the scene by the time authorities arrived. Investigations are ongoing.
