River piracy attack on ferry in Amazonas
Overview
Armed criminals, described by the Amazonas State Security Public Secretariat as ‘river pirates’, attacked the ferry boat Rosa de Saron in the Middle Solimões region of Amazonas. The vessel was traveling from Maraã toward Manaus when approximately ten hooded suspects in high-speed motorboats intercepted the ship.
During the attack, which lasted several hours, the assailants used rifles, fired shots, and threatened over 200 passengers. Reports indicate that suspects assaulted passengers and crew, stole money, personal belongings, and merchandise, and caused structural damage to cargo areas and the ship’s refrigerator. One crew member was reportedly subjected to electric shocks.
While some witnesses suggested the motive might have been to locate drugs on board, police have not confirmed this. The Amazonas Military Police dispatched boats from Tefé to the scene, but the suspects had already fled. Investigations are ongoing to identify those involved.
