River Plate leads South American transfer spending
River Plate has emerged as the leading investor in the recent South American transfer window, spending 52.4 million euros (approximately 306 million reais). According to data from Transfermarkt, this expenditure exceeds the combined investments of the other 29 clubs in the Argentine first division, signaling a shift in the continental market where Brazilian clubs like Flamengo and Palmeiras previously held dominance.
Mexican clubs also showed significant economic strength, with Atlas, América, Monterrey, and Toluca appearing in the top ten. In Brazil, Cruzeiro and Vasco were the only teams among the top ten highest spenders.
Historically, the club's success has been shaped by influential managers. Marcelo Gallardo is highlighted for his highly successful tenure between 2014 and 2022, during which he secured 14 titles, including the 2018 Copa Libertadores victory against Boca Juniors. Other legendary figures include Ángel Labruna, who contributed significantly to the club both as a player and a coach.
